Hackers Claim New Fingerprint Biometric Attack
Ann Harrison, SecurityFocus 2003-08-13

Two German hackers say they have developed a technique to defeat biometric fingerprint scanners used to authenticate electronic purchasing systems. Unlike an earlier fingerprint attack developed by the pair last year, this system creates latex fingertip patches designed to be used while under observation.

What kind of sensors did they fake? 1D, 2D optical, 3D capacitive (moisture and pressure sensitive)? Testing is a good idea, but who pays that bill. I suggest buying one and try it out first. We use Ringdale access control for our house and works good, price was good, and they use only ethernet. Not RS485 converted to TCP/IP. RS485 is what most companies in the industry that I researched uses and that's not very forward looing. It's got to be that way! Yes, the whole age of biometric are very welcoming if you've done your homework and choose a company that comes from a more practical standpoint. Yes, I agree with Ben on the understanding point, but some people are not always coming from an un-biased standpoint either. We like U are U, Facekey and Ringdale, as they come from the old school or biometrics. Consultants are very expensive when it comes to biometrics, so just spend that money on a few products and check it out for yourself. Yes, I agree with Irving on theses type reports being good, but if someone wants to get into that secured area, well they kitk the door down. It may save some time and money that way! Smartcards are expensive, so you got to store biometric templates in the server not in the reader hanging on the outside the door. I'd bet Starbug and Lisa would love to get their hands on a few readers that have all the templetes on the device. The big questiong should be is "who's got the good stuff" and "when can we get our hands on it". How much are you willing to spend $1500 per door or $3000-6000 to secure a door, a pc $200 or $3000, a printer $1000, time and attendance terminals $1500 or...you get the point. email me at tsieli (at) yahoo (dot) com [email concealed] with some free forums that talk about biometrics.
